- "Carpenter's Shop" Dept. 56 Little Town Of Bethlehem Set of 3, Item #59801. Introduced 2000 and retired 2002. Mint condition piece in original box & sleeve. Includes the shop bulding and both figures. During the first century A.D. the hub of any thriving village was the marketplace and a street of shops where craftsmen made and sold their wares. Among the most respected trades was carpentry, and while most villages could support at least one, Nazareth is thought to have been a town of carpenters. According to tradition, the son of a carpenter would have learned the trade from his father, beginning a formal apprenticeship at age 15. A smithy could usually be found next to the carpenter's shop, since thier combined skills were needed to make and repair farm implements. Size: 5.5" x 5.5" x 6.5".
